Visual Theology

Dear colleagues!

The Scientific and Educational Center “Humanitarian Urbanistics” of the Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University, the Editorial Board of the Journal of Visual Theology invites you to take part in the Second International Scientific Symposium “Visual Theology. Representations of Cultural Identity”. The Symposium will be held on October 2–3, 2023 in Veliky Novgorod on the basis of the Higher Humanitarian
School “Antonovo”. The Symposium dedicated to research in the field of visual theology is a regular scientific event. The first Symposium took place in Veliky Novgorod in 2021.

The purpose of the Symposium: definition of the role of sacred visual composition and complexes in the formation, preservation and translation of cultural identity.

Visual fixation and translation of theological ideas and norms are among the essential features of religious culture. Physically appeared or implied visual forms ofexpression of theological knowledge or moral and theological prescriptions constitute a huge and diverse field of religious theory and practice. The visual, along with the verbal, carries a significant semantic load in the systematization of doctrine and in the areas of liturgical actions, practices of hierotopy and organization of everyday habitable space, demonstration of hierarchical status, confessional affiliation and cultural identity.

The development of knowledge in the field of visual theology contributes to a deeper understanding of such humanitarian phenomena as the connection of image and meaning in semiotic practices, the cultural memory of a regional community or a nation, the visual code of the inhabited space, the iconic representation of sociocultural and civic identity. These topics define the sphere of scientific interest of the participants of the symposium.

The application deadline is September 1, 2023. The applications should be sent to vistheo@yandex.ru. The Organizing Committee has the right to select applications. Participation in the Symposium will be confirmed by the official invitation. Form of participation: full-time. The remote participation is not provided.

The proceedings of the Symposium will be published in the Journal of Visual Theology (indexed by Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory, EBSCO, DOAJ and ERIH). The deadline for submitting materials for publication is September 15, 2023.
